Our Mission
AT&T has committed to be carbon neutral across our entire global operations by 2035.
AT&T has committed to be carbon neutral across our entire global operations by 2035.
We prioritize sustainable business practices to address the global challenges our environment faces, and we’re an active participant in the effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
AT&T has set an interim, science-based goal to reduce our direct and indirect (or Scope 1 and 2) emissions by 63% by 2030 (compared to 2015 levels). To achieve both this target and our 2035 carbon neutrality commitment, we’re pursuing innovative strategies such as:
By engaging in deals with renewable energy developers, AT&T reduces our emissions, hedges against rising energy costs and helps add more clean electricity to the U.S. power grid. We currently rank 5th on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Green Power Partnership list of corporate renewable energy users.
AT&T is lowering emissions from our fleet by optimizing routes, purchasing more efficient vehicles (including hybrid and electric vehicles) and reducing the size of the fleet.
Each year, AT&T implements thousands of energy efficiency projects across our network and operations, lowering electricity use and reducing costs.
Reducing emissions isn’t just good for the planet; it’s good for business. At AT&T, we believe our connectivity solutions can unlock new levels of efficiency and innovation for our customers, helping them reduce emissions on a massive scale. In 2021, we set our Gigaton Goal: to enable the reduction of 1 billion metric tons of CO2e by 2035. To achieve this ambitious target, we are working with customers to develop Smart Climate Solutions that integrate AT&T Fiber, 5G and Internet of Things (IoT) with complementary technologies that help move us to a lower-carbon economy. By the end of 2023, we made significant progress, reaching nearly 20% of the goal. .
But we understand that efficiency enabled by connectivity isn’t enough. We need to focus on game-changing innovation that fundamentally shifts how we think about emissions reduction. That’s why, in 2025, we are pivoting our approach. We’ve identified six key areas where we believe AT&T Fiber, 5G and IoT can not only enhance efficiency in traditional operations, but also foster the growth of new, emissions-reducing industries.
Energy and emissions monitoring, optimization and reporting
EV charging, autonomous and vehicle-to-infrastructure
Optimize renewable production and storage with sensors and IoT
Reduce methane leaks with sensors, video intelligence, connectivity (satellite)
Support carbon removals by enabling data to prove credibility
Smart manufacturing and logistics (hydrogen, Sust Aviation Fuel)
To scale existing and identify new Smart Climate Solutions, AT&T has launched the Connected Climate Initiative (CCI). It fosters collaboration with innovative businesses, university research teams and nonprofit leaders who recognize the benefits of pairing AT&T connectivity solutions with other advanced technologies. By working together, AT&T and CCI participants aim to identify, develop and introduce solutions that can significantly decrease emissions.
As part of the CCI, AT&T collaborates closely with leading environmental NGOs. Carbon Trust develops strategies and calculates emissions impact, and Third Derivative identifies and collaborates with innovative startups. We’ve also worked with long-standing CCI participants, such as Badger Meter, Equinix, Soiltech, GCP and Salesforce, to develop Smart Climate Solutions in other areas.
